"What lies buried in the mind is destined to be revealed..."

Laurel Dewey’s eagerly awaited debut fiction novel is a gritty, crime thriller with a paranormal edge. Detective Jane Perry has an almost psychic instinct for solving some of Denver, Colorado’s most emotionally jarring homicides. Known as “The Blue Sense” by cops, Jane has learned to keep her intuitive gift low-key. But now that insight has taken on a new, more disturbing twist.

Ever since the car bombing and murder of a family Jane and her partner were protecting, she has been plagued with disconnected images that predict events yet to happen. One of Jane’s disturbing visions inexplicably leads to nine-year-old Emily Lawrence. The traumatized child is thought to have witnessed the brutal stabbing death of her parents but is unable to remember anything about that gruesome moment. Jane and Emily form a deep bond, unaware that they share a fateful connection.

When the killer makes a bold attempt on Emily’s life, Jane is chosen as the child’s sole protector. However, Jane’s disturbing visions continue and seem to portend a tragic end to the child’s life. In order to solve this horrific crime, Jane must come face-to-face with her greatest fear in order to save Emily.

“Protector” is a character-driven, paranormal thriller that captures the reader’s attention from the first chapter and lingers on the psyche long after the last page is turned.

A personal message from Laurel Dewey to readers about Protector

Protector is labeled as a crime fiction thriller. But it’s also a lot more. It’s the journey of Detective Jane Perry as she comes face-to-face with a powerful, unseen force she can’t explain but seems to be driving her life and compelling her to take action. If Jane ignores that gut intuition or those odd visions that make no sense to her, she will lose her battle. But Jane Perry is not someone who easily accepts that mystical, unexplainable place, lingering just outside the thin veil of what we call reality. However, that unseen reality still exists and continues to function whether she wants to believe it or not.

It’s that otherworldly dimension that has always fascinated me. No, not just ghosts or cute 10-year-old boys who “see dead people.” I’m talking about the stuff that connects us as human beings…That symbiotic weirdness of synchronistic events that makes a thinking person stand back and say, “Damn, there must be a God.”

You know what I’m talking about because you’ve felt it and you’ve been there. You’ve felt that quiver of recognition as the hairs on your arms stood up and paid attention. Perhaps you’ve had dreams that made no sense at the time until they played out in your “real” life. Some of you may not want to admit it because the sensation doesn’t jive with your upbringing or it clashes with your religion. But what I’m talking about exists whether you want to believe it or not. It’s the link between humans and the unseen forces that can guide us or destroy us. It’s the power of the mind and the determination of the soul. It’s where you allow your heart to see what your brain can’t fathom.

And that’s exactly the dilemma that Detective Jane Perry finds herself in as she tries to solve the interlocking mysteries within Protector.

Remember: What lies buried in the mind is destined to be revealed…
